About the work
‘Whitewashed’ is inspired by winter bramble, where stems pale and the structure of the plant becomes more visible. As leaves fall and colour recedes, attention shifts to line, form and rhythm. Plants can take on an architectural presence within our landscape.
Bramble (Rubus fruticosus) is a resilient, fast-growing species that forms dense, interwoven thickets. These provide important shelter and food for wildlife through the colder months. In winter, its exposed framework reveals a complexity often hidden during periods of growth.
The arching lines reflect this, creating a sense of something half-hidden and half-revealed, as though a narrative remains beneath the surface.
